Sample Essay...

Swallowing Stones: The Ending
There are several reasons why I did not like the ending of the novel Swallowing Stones by Joyce McDonald.  This is because I expected the ending to include the final meeting of Jenna and Michael. Instead, the author chose to end the in a cliff hanger.  For example, Jenna is asleep in the Ghost Tree at the end and Michael has come there to wait until morning in order to confess his crime.  "...Michael keeps watch over Jenna, just as he did on those other evening vigils when he sat across from her house on the church steps.  Only this time, when she awakes, he will be there waiting."  This last line of the novel, proves the book ends in a cliff-hanger which was disappointing. Overall, the ending of the novel was less than satisfying.
