   MONDAY - 9/15 - Vocabulary Cards

    • Use each of the following words in a sentence that proves you understand the meaning of the word.

  • Learning Target - I can create my own tools for memorizing vocabulary words.

    • Mini-Lesson:

    • Practice:  Create your own Vocabulary Flash Cards. 

    • Assessment:  Mr. DeGrandis will check your work at the end of the period for classwork grade worth 10 points.

    • Homework:  Finish your vocabulary flash cards and begin to study for the vocabulary test on Thursday!

    • Read the guiding questions below.  Based on our Gallery Walk and our Mix and Mingle activities... 
      1. ...what are some ways you might describe what home is?
      2. ...how might critical incidents(events) reveal  a person's character?

      • I can make inferences to deepen my understanding of Inside Out & Back Again(Inferencing)

      • I can cite evidence from the novel to explain how incidents reveal aspects of Ha's character (personality) as she is shaped by war. (Proving what you think the novel is saying by quoting accurately with words, phrases and details from the novel.)

      • I can use context clues to figure out the meaning of words I don't know.

      • I can participate in discussions about the text with a partner, small group and the whole class.


    • New Strategy:  Numbered Heads Together 
      • Mr. D. will assign each of you a number from 1-4.
      • Meet with your group.
      • Mr. D will give the class a question.  Each of you answers the question on your own first.
      • Share your answer with your group. 
      • Decide on the best response and be ready to share.
      • Mr. D. will call on a specific number to share the thinking of your group for participation points.

      • Number 1's be prepared to share your group's thoughts.

      • Question:  What are some things you remember about the gallery walk and mix and mingle (sentences) activities from last week?


    • Mini-Lesson:
      • Last week we looked at images and read some details about the topic of this module.
      • Today we will begin our study of the novel Inside Out & Back Again reading closely by reading the first poem of the novel 1975: year of the Cat.

      • Focus Question
        • "No one would believe me, but at times I would prefer wartime in Saigon over peacetime in Alabama."

        • Based on the photos you saw and the sentence strips we read, what do you think might have happened to a little girl to make her say she preferred war at home (Saigon) to peace in Alabama (the United States)?

        • Number 4's be prepared to share the group's answer the question!


    • Getting the Gist:  Getting your initial reaction to what the text is mostly about.

      • You will do this now as you hear the first poem of the novel, 1975: The Year of the Cat read aloud.

    • Turn and Talk:
      • What is your initial sense of the what the poem is mostly about?

      • What are some things you notice about the language the author is using? (3's will share out)

      • What are some details that strike you and why? (4's will share out)

      • Hey! Don't forget good group manners! (invite others to share, be polite, disagree kindly)

    • Read it Again to Yourself: What have you already learned about Ha in this very first poem?

    • Homework/Assessment:  On a half sheet of loose-leaf paper with a complete heading, answer the following question:

      • What are some details in the text helped you learn more about Ha's character?

    • Study for the vocabulary test on Thursday!





     WEDNESDAY - 9/17 Novel Intro Continued

    • Entry Title:  Good Readers Infer!

    • To infer means to basically take something from the text and combine it with something you already know in order to figure something out.  You will infer again today in order to learn more about Ha's character.

       THURSDAY - 9/18 - Vocabulary Review Day  
      • Reminders
        • 1.  Get your composition book!
        • 2.  Check for handouts!
        • 3.  Grab 1 colored popsicle stick!

      • Do Now - THINK
      • Entry Title:  3-in-1 Sentences

      • Use three vocabulary words correctly in one sentence!  Underline the words.

      • Example:  I accidentally lapsed into a strange reverie during English class where I was a brazen stallion galloping through a mall!

      • Learning Targets for Today

        • I can prepare for a vocabulary test in order to obtain the highest grade possible.

      • New Strategy:  Around the Room and Back
        • An  activity where teams travel "around the room and back" in a competition to complete station challenges that review class content.

      • How it works...
          • Your stick color determines the make up of your group.
          • Your teacher will assign each color group to a station to begin the game.
          • You will have 3 minutes to complete the challenge.
          • The group who completes the challenge before time runs out wins that round.
          • The group that wins the most rounds before returning to their original station wins three raffle tickets each for the next class raffle!

        • Reminder:  Use good sportsmanship!

      • Assessment: Observation of team sportsmanship and quality of responses at each station.

        • Part 3:  Write a Sentence

      • Homework:  Study for the test on Monday!
