  5. Important: When we read, we often get an idea in our minds of what characters look like or how they are supposed to act. We imagine scenes and settings. Directors, actors, and even the screenwriter make decisions about how a novel is going to be portrayed on screen, including changing things dramatically on occasion. The director also uses camera angles, lighting, music, and different types of shots to tell the story.

Work Time


  1. View video segment 39:00:00 to 41:00:00: The Golden Rule scene, film.
  2. Write your answers in each column as you view the clip.
  3. With your Syracuse appointment, discuss your answers.
  4. Watch the film clip again, focusing on the camera angles, lighting, types of shots, music, or the movements of the actors. Students will evaluate the choices made by the director or actors and the impact those choices have on the viewer or the scene. 
  5. How does the director make use of close ups?

      3. Watch the first two minutes of the TED Talk.  We will view the clip twice.

      1. Q1:  Turn and Talk:  Answer the first question on the Note-catcher with your partner. Be prepared to share for tickets.
      2. Q2: Create a consensus definition of the word compassion.
      3. Q3:  Cold Call for responses.  Watch the video again and refine your answer.
      4. Q4: What does "ethical culture" mean?  Listen to the passage again (page 47).

      What is one example of compassion in the novel and explain how it reflects the Golden Rule!  Use TREES to structure your response.


      In the novel TKMB by Harper Lee, there are many examples of compassion.  This is because the author is trying to communicate the importance of the Golden Rule as a theme in the book.

      TKM: Read Chapters 8-14 and complete the SGQs for the Monday you return from Spring Break!  There will be a test on these chapters upon your return and the SGQs will be collected for a grade.
