Week 24 - Periods 7 & 9

  MONDAY - Double Period

  • 1. Grab a color stick and handout.

  • 2. Read over your Independent Reading Rubric grade and decide upon which area you would like to focus today. Then...

  •                      3.  Independently read your novel for 10 minutes.

  •                      4.  Answer Reader Response - 5 minutes - Use Proper DIRT Format!
  •  
  •      Select one of the following reading strategies and respond...
  •  
  •       1.  Make a connection (text to text, text to self, text to world)
  •       2.  Visualize a part of your novel and describe using imagery.
  •       3.  Ask a question to clarify your understanding of a part of your novel.
  •       4.  Determine/Explain why a part of your novel is important.
  •       5.  Make an Inference (logical conclusion) or a Prediction about your novel.
  •       6.  Synthesize (put it together)several ideas to create an original idea about your novel.

  • Be prepared to share your reader response for a ticket for the next raffle and a participation grade.

  • Announcement: Personal Narrative: Tomorrow, you must have the rough draft of your Personal Narrative done in order to join us in the library or you will be hand-writing it before you can use a computer.


  • Word Study (Copy into Word List VIII)

  • Learning Frame:  By the end of class today you should be able to identify the elements of a personal narrative and identify these in your own personal narrative!  

  • Read Aloud/Think Aloud (Pages 41-44) Today's Focus will be on reviewing the elements of the personal narrative in a published text to help you identify these elements in your own text.

  • Mini-Lesson:  Review the elements of a personal narrative and review the rules for playing Around the Room and Back!

  • Guided Practice:  Reconvene as a class and discuss the answers you found during game play about setting, character, dialogue and imagery.

  • Assessment:

  •    1.  Share your personal narrative with a partner.  Read their narrative and identify the 4 elements in their personal narrative using the following symbols...

  •                                S  - etting
  •                                D - ialogue
  •                                C - haracter
  •                                - magery

  • NOTE:  There may be more than one instance of each element.  You may use each symbol more than once. 

  •    2.  Write "Edited by:" at the bottom of page 1 and print your name.

  •    3.  This will be a grade worth 50 points!

  •    4.  Hand in your partner's paper with your feedback before leaving for the day.

  • REMINDER!  Go directly to the library tomorrow.  Do not come to class.  You must still be on time! Plan accordingly!

      TUESDAY - WEDNESDAY  

  • All classes will be in the Library Computer Lab peer editing and typing up final copies of their Personal Narratives which are due on Friday by the end of period 9. 
  •  
  • Learning Target:  Today and tomorrow you will type up the rough draft of your Personal Narrative.

  • Your Grade:  You will be graded on the amount of work you complete.  Ten minutes before the end of the period you will receive classwork effort grade that will go into this marking period's average.

Materials for the Personal Narrative Assignment

  •   THURSDAY  

  • Writing Targets:
  •       1.   Complete the rough draft of your Personal Narrative and print it.
  •       2.   Have this draft peer edited by TWO different people using the Personal Narrative Rubric!
  •       3.   Show the peer edited draft to a teacher for approval and a an effort grade.
  •       4.  Type a final draft incorporating the corrections from both peer editors.

  • Your Grade:  You will be graded on the amount of work you complete.  Ten minutes before the end of the period you will receive classwork effort grade that will go into this marking period's average.
