  • 5.  engender (engenders) - to bring a feeling into existence
         
    When the principal announced that students could no longer wear sneakers to school, it engendered anger in the student body.

  • 6.  pacify (pacified, pacifying, pacifies) - to ease someone's anger; calm someone down
         
    After dropping her cell phone in the muddy puddle, I tried to pacify my friend by offering her a big, warm hug.

  • 7.  squander - to spend wastefully or in large quantities
         
    Many lottery winners squander their money within the the first year and end up with nothing to show for it.

  • 8.  mar (marred, marring, mars) - to destroy the appearance of something
  •      Carey marred the smooth finish of her new Cadillac when she accidentally scratched it with her large silver bracelet.

  • 9.  ardent - enthusiastic
  •      Being an ardent Bills fan, Mark painted his face half red and half blue to show his love for the team.

  • 10.  exacerbate (exacerbates, exacerbating, exacerbated, exacerbating) - to make something bad even worse
  •        The singer's terrible voice was exacerbated by the awful pianist who didn't know how to accompany her.

Returning of previous work and Vocabulary List I Tests
  • Keep all returned assignments in your Blue folder for future reference!
  • Don't throw anything away!
  • Have any assignments that are below a C, signed and brought back to me.


Mini-lesson:  Refresher on how to complete your Ha Anchor Chart
  • Each Group Needs: chart paper, dark colored markers (one color per person), novels, comp books and blue folders.
  • Model:  Review the model Anchor Chart. 
  • don't forget to write your name on back of the chart in your original color.  This is how I will track your contributions to the group.
  • These charts will help anchor your learning about Ha.  We will revisit these charts throughout the unit.

Practice - Finish Your Group Anchor Chart
  • You may use notes and the novel.
  • You will have only 20 minutes!
  • When your group is done, ask Mr. DeGrandis to review it.
  • Share out to the class.
Assessment:  Responses on anchor chart from each student!

Read pages 10-21 of Inside Out and Back Again for the gist!

Mini-Lesson:  Read Aloud/Think Aloud
  • Reviewing the texts
    • Periods 1, 2, & 9: The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe
    • Periods 4 & 6:  The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant
  • Review identifying words that reveal character traits.

Assessment
  • Add at least one new piece of evidence and make one inference on your Inferencing Pre-test.
